The Fijian word Taukei, which means "owner" or "original inhabitant," is now commonly used to refer to indigenous Fijians.

The concept of original ownership of the land has given the TAUKEI the power to insist that they, and not the Europeans who were the first settlers of the islands and have the rights to the land, its resources, and the political powers of Fiji.
